Increased Online Dating Use – The Stats

UK online dating market was estimated to be worth £150 million in 2014.

Worldwide, there has been a 57% increase in the use of online dating sites.

A 2015 Match.com and Ipsos ASI study indicates that there are 12.7 million singles in the UK . This is a sizeable proportion of the 40.2 million people between 18 and 65 years old living in the UK.

Internet couples tend to be a better fit than those who meet by traditional means, according to new research.

A study of 2,300 people between 18 and 34 years old reveals that 39% met through friends, 22% social situations, 18% work, 10% online dating, 6% social media.

There are dating sites, which can cost up to £3,000 a year to join, offer their clients a bespoke selection of potential partners to share your love of sushi, dachshunds or The Apprentice.

It is estimated that the industry is worth more than £2bn globally. In the UK, it is worth £300m a year, according to the UK’s Online Dating Association (ODA)

Interestingly, older daters spend more time looking at the sites than younger ones – they also go on more dates than any other group.

Over the last two years there has been a 4% jump in those aged between 35 and 44 using online dating and a further 5% jump between 45 and 54 year olds.

In a new study performed by the respected research centre Pew:

  • A majority of people now say online dating is a good way to meet people
  • More and more over 40s are dating online
  • 5% of those married or in committed relationships now say they met online
  • One in five online daters have asked for help with their profile
  • A third of online daters still haven’t met somebody in real life yet

In last Pew Research Center survey:

The share of 18- to 24-year-olds who use online dating has roughly tripled from 10% in 2013 to 27% today.

12% of 55- to 64-year-olds report ever using an online dating site or mobile dating app versus only 6% in 2013.
